Pure Taekwondo has always been one of the biggest parts of my life. From the age of 7 it was the biggest teacher of discipline to young me, a lesson which I would take throughout the rest of my life. Walking into the class at Pure Taekwondo was my first real sense of having to maintain a quiet demeanor, and having to do my utmost best to follow the instructions given to me. My first memory of learning discipline through the art was early. My master, Grandmaster Carlo, had given an off handed compliment to another kid in the class, calling them the most disciplined student. This flipped a switch in me. I began my mission to be as respectful and disciplined as I possibly could be. I had to be the best in the class, there was no stopping at mediocre, or good enough. I started slowly, since the initial class was only once or twice a week at school for around 30 or 45 minutes, I didn’t learn very quickly, despite trying my best. After 5 to 10 sessions, I went into the on-site Dojang, in order to further my progression. This would be the first milestone in what is now a nearly 10 year career.

Happy or sad, energetic or tired, I would always be at Pure Taekwondo Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. It was one of the few things in my life that I was always consistent with, except when out of the state or country. It taught me the value of consistency in my life. Even if I wasn’t sure if I should go to class or not, simply showing up made the biggest difference. The idea of “just show up” has applied to a lot of my other pursuits, such as my work life, academic life, and even personal life. Learning it at such a young age enabled me to grow and flourish in the many ways which I did.
With my school obligations and college preparation, my Taekwondo journey has naturally evolved. While my progress isn’t as rapid as before, my training remains consistent, and I continue to grow in new ways. I take great pride in my journey and the many lessons that Pure Taekwondo has instilled in me, shaping both my discipline and resilience. Now, as I prepare to test for my 2nd Dan—a rank I once thought unattainable—I’m reminded of how dedication and perseverance can turn the impossible into reality.
Training at Pure Taekwondo has been more than just an afterschool activity, more than a sport, physical exercise, or even a martial art.
Grandmaster Carlo was one of my first and most influential teachers. His lessons have stayed with me, shaping who I am today. I'm so grateful to have him as my mentor.
I truly don’t know where I would be without them.
